Costa Hall Geelong Refurbishment

Deakin University
Geelong VIC, in Wadawurrung country
2021
$1.5m contract value

Costa Hall had not had a major refurbishment since its original construction in 1995. The 1500-seat theatre is used for large-scale concerts, conferences, meetings, lectures and graduations by Deakin University, and also by Geelong Arts Centre for performances, events, and community hire. Across three levels, WRA rebuilt the FOH facilities including foyer, bar, and box office. The balcony level seating is also used for university lectures and provides improved usability via fabric operable walls and airlocks for acoustic performance.

The existing building reflects the Geelong waterfront precinct’s historic woolsheds. We approached the interiors sympathetically, retaining the iconic stained glass windows and exposed timber structure. Furniture and finishes selections refresh the aesthetic appeal of the auditorium with long-lasting durable materials. BOH was also extensively redeveloped with flexible rehearsal, dressing rooms, and amenities for both performers and visitors.
