Canterbury, NSW in Darug and Eora country
2024 anticipated completion
$44.6m contract value

WRA has been engaged by Canterbury-Bankstown Council as Principal Architect to redevelop the 1960s aquatic centre into a thriving community hub with a focus on accessible aquatic facilities and the introduction of new multi-purpose fitness, health and well-being programs.

Having partnered up with local studio, Kennedy Associates to ensure a strong local appreciation and presence, extensive stakeholder consultation took place early in the project to clearly define the return brief including facility and operational requirements.

The redevelopment comprises:

  • Outdoor 50m x 8 lane pool

  • Outdoor water play area

  • Indoor 25m x 8 lane pool

  • Indoor warm water pool with accessible spa

  • Sauna

  • Café

  • Gymnasium, group fitness, spin and weights rooms

  • Group fitness outdoor areas

  • Wellness / allied health suites

  • Expanded carparking.

A strong focus on accessibility and inclusion provides easily navigable circulation spaces, accessible bathrooms and Changing Places facilities.

An extensive public art program run by Council has resulted in a new sculpture being commissioned for the project. The artist will work further with the design team embedding the artwork story through the centre.
