Oamaru Opera House Restoration
Waitaki District Council
Oamaru NZ
2007
$10m contract value
Working in collaboration with Council’s conservation architect, WRA were responsible for the restoration of this century old Edwardian lyric theatre. The neo-classical theatre and former Council offices are some of the most significant buildings in an intact nineteenth century streetscape.
The project involved refurbishing the entire building, restoring compromised historic components, and adding new facilities to make the Opera House a viable community cultural centre for the 21st century. This included foyer upgrades, function rooms, and a new 110 seat multi-format theatrette for a variety of community activities. The upgrade included earthquake strengthening and façade stonework restoration, completely new services and theatre infrastructure, new backstage amenities, and loading dock improvements.
