The Drum Theatre
City of Greater Dandenong
Dandenong VIC, in Bunurong country
2006
$13m contract value
WRA developed an initial $15m proposal for the Dandenong Performing Arts Centre providing a 750-seat proscenium theatre that could convert into a flat floor, 300-person function venue. Council then decided to reduce the project scope and adopted a 525-seat fixed format theatre.
The site includes the historic Mechanics Hall building which was refurbished as the entry, foyer, bar, functions and administration facilities. A glazed internal atrium celebrates both the old and new buildings. The theatre is expressed as a dramatic, modern “drum” that envelopes the auditorium, foyer amenities, and fly-tower as a single, strongly coloured form.
Since its opening, The Drum Theatre’s success has been recognised through the following awards:
Australian Property Institute Award for Excellence, 2008
RAIA Vic Chapter, Winner - Public Buildings, Alterations and Additions, 2007
South East Development Awards, Winner Chairman’s Premier Award and Best Building Conversion Award 2007
Master Builders Association Victoria, Award for Excellence in Construction
2006
