Williams Ross Architects create social value through engagement, turning peoples’ ideas into reality, delivering high quality design and solving complex design challenges.

Our practice bears the names of our two founders, Bill Williams and Virginia Ross.

Bill was taught bricklaying by his father before becoming a protégé of the renowned architect Robin Boyd at Grounds Romberg and Boyd. He was later Director of the recognised practices Gunn Hayball and Gunn Williams Fender, before establishing the practice in 1988.

Virginia Ross joined at the business’ inception, becoming Director in 1992 and Managing Director in 2006. It is her expertise in theatre design, including back stage experience from a life in performance, that underpins our highly successful arts and culture portfolio.

Bill passed away in 2007, passionately 'in harness' to the last. He instilled in us the aspiration for excellence in design and service, high standards in communication and documentation, and respect for artisanship.

In 2020 Virginia handed over the reins to our next generation of leaders, having mentored and grown her team over the years. She continues to play an active role in our team, enriching our work from over 30 years of lessons learned in the industry.
